Retro Review: Metal Gear (MSX2)

May 28, 2011 Leave a comment

Title: Metal Gear
System: MSX2
Release: July 7, 1987
Developer: Konami
Publishers: Konami

Today I will review a little game called Metal Gear. Designed by Hideo Kojima, who is today, one of the bigger icons in the gaming industry. Metal Gear was acually not Kojima’s work in the beginning. But he took over the project early in it’s development, and finished it. thats a little history behind the game. But let’s start the review.

Story:
The game takes place in 1995 (it was a game taking place in the future, since metal gear came out in 1987), in a state in South Africa called Outer Heaven. You play as Solid Snake. A rookie member of a special forces group called FOXHOUND. Your mission is to Rescue one of the top agents of FOXHOUND, Gray Fox, and destroy a weapon of mass destruction, Metal Gear.

For being a late 80’s game, the story is really deep. You can have a conversation with people thru codec, and you will be called sometimes when you make progress in the game. There is even some plot twists that is really surprising. Great story in this game.

Gameplay:
If you have plated any of the other Metal Gear games, you will know what this is about. Metal Gear is a Stealth game. That means that you are not supposed to run right in front of an enemy and shoot. you have to take a different path and sneak past them. Occasionally you have to sneak up to an enemy’s back and kill him to get past.

Now you might think that you won’t have any use of the weapons you pick up. But there are boss fights in this game, and they are all really fun and exciting. Some minor issues is the elevators. They are really weird. but you will understand when you play. It’s hard to explain. Also, it’s confusing sometimes because you don’t know where to go. you maybe need some special cardkey, or you might have to blow up a wall. These are just minor issues and won’t really destroy the game.

Sound:
The music in Metal Gear is great. Theme of Tara will be stuck in your head, since that is the song you will hear most. Maybe you will hear Red Alert a lot to, if your really bad at this game ūüôā It’s also an awesome song by the way. the other songs in the game is also good. they are all rememberable.

Graphics:
The game looks ok. I guess. The thing is that it does not look any different from any other games around that time. it does not stand out. But it isn’t awful. it’s good, it’s just not so special.

Verdict:

Metal Gear has both great story, gameplay, and music. Really fun game. not one of the best Metal Gear-games I have played. But it is high up on the list.

Pros

  • Great Plot!
  • Great Gameplay!
  • Great Music!

Cons

  • Confusing elevators.
  • Hard to find where to go next.

Score

Story: 9.0/10
Gameplay: 8.0/10
Sound: 8.0/10
Graphics: 7.5/10

Overall: 8.5/10

My thought about the Wii 2/Stream/Project caf√©/feel and all the rumors

I’m a little late to the party. But I will now go¬†thru the most interesting¬†rumors, and whats have been confirmed by Nintendo themselves.

confirmations

I will first talk about what Nintendo has confirmed. Nintendo has confirmed that they are working on a new console, and that they will reveal it on E3 this year. there is also talk that it will be playable at E3, and not just that you will see someone play it on the press conference. But that everyone will have a chance to try it.

This is really exciting. Not only do we get to see new 3DS games, but we will also see the new console on the same conference, and probably some games for it.

Specifications, and hardware

Now let’s talk about the¬†specs. I won’t go into details, since¬†we don’t know so much about it. But it’s suppose to be significantly stronger than the Xbox 360, and Playstation 3, and it’s suppose to be the next-generation of games. It’s release date is set in 2012 so it really early for a console who just been announced. Microsoft and Sony is focusing on releasing their new consoles 2014. so they are not ready to release a new console any time soon.

This is a mockup on how a game for the system could look like.

If they are trying to appeal to the “Hardcore” audience, and is releasing¬†it as a next-gen console. Then¬†it’s kind of obvious that it will be more powerful than the current-gen consoles. But Nintendo will have a head start, just like the 360 had this generation. But it could as well become like the Dreamcast, and die in a couple of years. I have no idea what will become of the new Nintendo console. But as long as they get good third-party support, and announce lots of good games for it, I think that it will do well.

Game developers that could be working with the system

It is also rumored that Rockstar¬†Games is working on a title for the system. Many think that it’s a Grand Theft¬†Auto V. But¬†that’s¬†still just speculations. also, I could be that Retro Studios is working on a game to.¬†it’s sounds more likely that Retro Studios is working on a game than Rockstar. Since Retro Studios is a studio owned by Nintendo.

¬†if Rockstar¬†is working on the next GTA¬†for Wii’s¬†successor, then it must be something special about the new system that we don’t know yet.

This years E3 is going to be exciting, and that’s just Nintendo’s part. It will be really exciting to see what¬†Microsoft and Sony have¬†up¬†their sleaved¬†for this years E3.

Review: Super Street Fighter IV: 3D Edition

March 29, 2011 Leave a comment

This review is more like a comparison between the 3DS version and the Console version

Title: Super Street Fighter IV: 3D Edition
System: Nintendo 3DS
Release: February 26, 2011
Developer: CAPCOM
Publisher: CAPCOM

I’m not going to include any “story” section this time. It would take too much time to cover every characters story. but to make a long story short, it’s about an evil guy named Seth, and you need to defeat him. I don’t think that anyone is really that interested in the story of a fighting-game anyway. let’s just start the review.

Gameplay:

Super Street Fighter IV: 3D Edition is a 2D fighting-game from CAPCOM. You can choose between 35 different characters, and you fight against opponents one-on-one. You can choose to play best of 3, 5, or 7 rounds. It’s basically just Super Street Fighter IV in 3D, with some extra modes.

I had a little trouble with the button-placement. It’s kinda hard to play with the D-pad and try hitting the shoulder-buttons to do a heavy kick/punch. but I customized the buttons so that I would feel comfortable, and when I did, I found out that the 3DS version of the game is not far away from the original, Gameplay wise. I could just throw out my combos without trouble, like when I play on my PS3. It’s awesome to know that you can hone your skills while you are on the go.

Sound:

Here comes a little disappointment. There is no Japanese voice options… Yoshinori Ono said that due to limitations of the 3DS game card memory they had to leave out the voice options. I can live with it. The English Voices is not bad. But I prefer the Japanese voices over the English.

I was never a big fan of the remixes in SSFIV. But they sound just like the console version. the sound quality is great.

Graphics:

This is what amazed me the most about the 3DS version. The backgrounds i detailed and nice. But sadly there is no animations like there was in the console version. The characters on the other hand looks AMAZING! They look almost identical to the ones on the PS3/360, and then it’s the 3D… Holy shit. It looks amazing. Sadly I have to turn it of after like 40 minutes because of my eye problems. Damn! I need to check my sight so I can get a pair of glasses.

Verdict:

Overall SSFIV:3D is a great fighting-game. It’s not as good as SSFIV. It just some minor issues that made the console version better. But it differently worth buying, and is the best 3DS game to date.

Pros:

  • The gameplay feels just as good as the console version
  • The Visuals is Amazing
  • Great button-customize options

Cons:

  • No japanese voice options
  • The backgrounds are not animated

Score:

Gameplay: 9.0/10
Sound: 6.0/10
Graphics: 8.5/10

Overall: 8.7/10

Retro Review: Xenogears

March 27, 2011 Leave a comment

Title: Xenogears
System: Sony Playstation
Release: February 11, 1998
Developer: Square
Publisher: Square

Story:

The story in Xenogears is amazing! The game takes place on a continent called Ignas, which is the biggest continent in Xenogears world. it takes place in a distant future. It’s like a mix of ÔĽŅmedieval and the future. people in their world live very simple. There is no electricity in most of the towns, and everything has a medieval setting. But there is also airships, computers, different kind of guns, and mech suits, which is called “Gears” in the game. Every kind of hi-tech stuff are found underground. Stuff that has been buried for thousands of years.

The characters in Xenogears is also amazing. the main character is a guy named Fei. He lives in a village called Lahan, where he was bought to 3 years before by a mysterious masked man. He does not have any memory from his past since then. One day the village is attacked by a group of Gears. Fei then pilots a Gear with intention of saving the village. He then witness one of his friend being killed and that causes him to snap and destroy the whole village. Later he wakes up and does not realise what he has done. He does not remember what happened after he watched his friend die. Citan, The village¬†doctor, and Fei’s friend, follows him away from the surviving villagers, and that is where the game begins.

Gameplay:

The gameplay in Xenogears is Traditional Turn-based RPG, with random encounters. But instead of choosing attacks from a menu (which is seen in a lot of other RPG’s, like Final Fantasy) you choose between 3 different attacks:

Triangle: Weak
Square: Moderate
Cross: Fierce

The attacks use Action Points (AP). the stronger the attack is, the more AP it costs. In the beginning of the game you will always start a battle with 3 AP. But later you will be able to wield more. AP also replenished after each turn in a battle. Weak attack costs 1 AP. Moderate attack costs 2 AP, and Fierce costs 3.¬† Combining these 3 in different ways can create something called “Deathblows”. “Deathblows” are long combos which hits more than a regular attack. you will learn more “Deathblows” the more you experiment with different combinations.

There is also a “Magic” system in the game. But they will mostly affect your stats under a battle, or heal a party member. But there are some that attacks. But they are not so special.

Sound:

The music in Xenogears is beautiful. Yasunori Mitsuda is the composer. do I need to say anything else? He is the man who composed the music for Chrono Trigger together with Nobou Uematsu and Noriko Matsueda. He also composed the music for Chrono Cross. My favorite soundtracks in the game is “Bonds Of Sea And Fire” and “Flight”.

Graphics:

The game environment in Xenogears is in 3D while the characters is in gorgeous 2D. The character portraits is also really well made. The graphics are very appealing. After you have seen the Graphics, you just want to start play it.

Pros:

  • Amazing Story
  • Great Gameplay
  • Gorgeous Soundtrack, and Graphics

Cons:

  • I have only one complain about this game, and that is, that the last character in the game does not get so much screen time. You get her so late in the game, that she does not get enough time to develop.

Score:

Story: 9.0/10
Gameplay: 8.5/10
Sound: 10/10
Graphics: 9.0/10

Overall: 9.2/10

Yoshinori Ono has something big to announce next month

March 26, 2011 Leave a comment

Yoshinori Ono, the creator of Street Fighter IV, will announce something big next month. Many believe that it has something to do with Street Fighter X Tekken. it could also be a DLC for Super Street Fighter IV, with the 4 new characters from the arcade version. But it could also be the release date for Street fighter III: Third Strike, for PSN, and Xbox live.

I think that it will be a reveal of the Super Street Fighter IV DLC. Many people have asked Ono, on his Twitter, about a DLC, and he has always answered that they have to wait until the release of the 3DS.
